Slowing Down with the Seasons – Gentle Breathwork for Autumn🍂
As the golden light softens and the leaves begin to fall, nature reminds us that it's okay to slow down. In Australia, May brings a time to slow down and turn inward — a perfect moment for reflection, rest, and recharging. But in a world that loves speed and productivity, slowing down can sometimes feel like we're going against the grain.
This is where the breath becomes our guide.
🍁 The Wisdom of Autumn
Autumn carries the energy of letting go — just as trees release their leaves, we too are asked to surrender what we no longer need. This season encourages us to shift from the outward activity of summer to a more inward focus. It's a time for grounding, simplifying, and listening deeply.
🌬️ The Breath as Seasonal Support
Our breath naturally mirrors the rhythm of the seasons. In breathwork, autumn is often associated with the exhale — the letting go, the softening, the release.
Gentle breath practices can help the body and mind transition more easily into this slower pace. They support the nervous system, help regulate emotions, and offer a moment of quiet in the middle of life's noise.
✨ A Simple Breath Practice for Autumn
Try this gentle breath pattern:
Find a quiet place where you can sit or lie comfortably.
Close your eyes and bring your awareness to your natural breath.
Inhale slowly for 4 counts, feeling the chest expand.
Exhale gently for 6 counts, imagining leaves falling from a tree.
Repeat this for 2–5 minutes, letting each breath be softer than the last.
Let your exhale be the invitation to slow down — not just in breath, but in life. Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:
🍃 “What am I ready to release as the leaves fall?”
Write down whatever comes up. No need to judge or fix — just let it be known.
